Microsoft Cancels Highly Anticipated Xbox Exclusive Scalebound

Scalebound

Bad news for Xbox One and PC gamers eagerly waiting to play Scalebound: It’s not going to happen.

Microsoft confirmed that the highly anticipated action role-playing game is dunzo.

“After careful deliberation, we have come to the decision to end production for Scalebound,” a note from Microsoft Studios on the Scalebound website reads. “This decision was not made lightly. At Microsoft, we remain committed to making Xbox and Windows 10 the best places to play games, and look forward to bringing ‘Halo Wars 2,’ ‘Crackdown 3,’ ‘State of Decay 2,’ ‘Sea of Thieves’ and other great experiences to our fans.”

The confirmation comes after Kotaku, citing multiple sources, on Monday reported that the game was “in trouble and may be cancelled.”

The news is sure to upset a lot of gamers. We here at PCMag called Scalebound one of the most anticipated games of 2016.

First announced in 2014 at E3, Scalebound was said to be a departure from the crazy-action gameplay that developer PlatinumGames is known for.

The idea was that players control the sword-wielding Drew, who is bound to a massive dragon. Drew and the dragon share the same life, so players would need to manage and command the dragon while fighting alongside Drew. The focus was less on stylish melee action, and more on supporting and commanding your dragon companion.

According to Kotaku, the game “had been in development hell for a long time” and its released date was pushed back several times.
